@mgh.harvard.edu is used both for identity and email.
The first account you get will likely be your MGB/Partners account. The most common domain for the department is @mgh.harvard.edu. Some people may have an alias for another domain, such as @partners.org or @mgb.org, but these are all MGB Accounts.
MGB uses Microsoft Active Directory and Okta for identity management. So, this account is used to authenticate to nearly all MGB resources.
MGB has historically had limitations on how much mail you could keep in your inbox. When they had onprem Outlook servers, employees were forced to offload mail as .pst files to stay under quota.
In the cloud, they have implemented another archiving policy. Any items in your primary mailbox (mail, calendar items, notes, and tasks) older than three years are automatically moved to an archive mailbox. Items older than ten years are permanently deleted.
@molbio.mgh.harvard.edu is used only for email.
Molecular Biology has always provided email accounts without any quotas. Your Molbio email account will have a domain of @molbio.mgh.harvard.edu.
Instead of using both MGB and Molbio accounts, most people prefer to redirect email from one account to the other. That way you only have to maintain a single account with all your mail.
@molbio-research.net is used only for identity.
Molecular Biology has a Microsoft Tenant where our OneNote ELN solution lives. This is the primary reason we have @molbio-research.net accounts. Ideally, we would have used @molbio.mgh.harvard.edu for these accounts to avoid confusion. Unfortunately, that domain was integrated into MGB's Active Directory many years ago. So, it was not available for us to use.
We use this account for our ELN solution and to provision software licenses. It requires 2FA to help keep your data safe.

There are some things to consider here. MGB uses Microsoft for identity. If you click Yes, you may experience issues with signing into MGB resources.
